Learning addition — adding with a system
"Addition is counting together: 3 + 4 means three steps and then four more. It is the very first operation — and with the right strategies it stays fast for a lifetime."
What is this topic about?
In addition, addends are combined into a sum. Key strategies make mental math fast: split numbers into friendly parts (8 + 7 becomes 8 + 2 + 5), use doubles (6 + 6) and neighbor tasks (6 + 7 = 6 + 6 + 1). Crossing ten — when the ones add up to more than ten — is the most important milestone in grade 1–2: students who master it later calculate two-digit and written sums almost automatically. Missing-number tasks like 5 + __ = 12 also train thinking in inverse operations.
The best way to learn it
Split numbers toward 10: first fill up to ten, then add the rest.
Practice doubles and neighbor tasks — you can build almost every sum from them.
For two-digit tasks, tens first, then ones — the reverse of reading order.
