Long division, explained the easy way
Take the example 936 ÷ 4. The secret: you never divide the whole number at once — only small bites, one digit at a time, from left to right.
1. Look at the first digit
Does 4 fit into 9? Yes — 9 ÷ 4 = 2, remainder 1. Write the 2 on top as the first digit of your answer, and remember the leftover 1.
2. Bring down the next digit
Bring the next digit (3) down next to the remainder: the 1 becomes 13. Divide again: 13 ÷ 4 = 3, remainder 1. Write the 3 on top.
3. Keep going until the digits run out
Bring down the last digit (6): the 1 becomes 16. And 16 ÷ 4 = 4, remainder 0. Write the 4 on top — every digit is used up.
4. Read off the answer — and check it
The digits on top are your answer: 234. Now the check: 234 × 4 = 936 — exactly the number you started with! A remainder of 0 at the very end means everything worked out.
Tip: always check with answer × divisor. If you get the starting number back, your division is right.
What you practice here
The Long Division worksheets train dividing large numbers the written way: digit by digit from left to right, bringing down the next digit, dividing again. In grades 4–6 this column method is a core skill — Numopia builds it one small step at a time.

Tips for parents and teachers
- Regularity beats volume: one sheet three times a week beats five sheets in one sitting. Ten to fifteen minutes of focused practice is plenty.
- Accuracy first, speed later: at the start, being right matters. Once two thirds of the problems are solved reliably, timing the sheet adds motivation — and shows progress at a glance.
- Discuss mistakes instead of just marking them: ask your child how they worked it out. Explaining the calculation reveals thinking errors on its own — and builds better strategies than simply checking answers.
